I have always been a massive fan of Alan Wake, and just as with Control, Alan Wake II's environments inspired me way too much, to the point I had to make a project based on it before even finishing the game.
My favourite level (until now) is the Oceanview Hotel, that's where this scene takes place. This is a safe room, complete with the Oh Deer Diner thermos, the shoe box and the strong white light. I used to work at a space very similar to this one, same dimensions and all, although it was a tickets booth at a theater. Nonetheless I did bring in some of that experience to this project, adding some personal touches on the calendar, the sticky notes and the placement of objects.
I’m especially proud of the shattered pattern on the vase that is matched on the inside, and the faded labels on the most pressed keys of the keyboard. The old PC was a project by itself, being the asset that took the longer to make. I made it as accurate as possible to the real thing, down the the shapes and placement of the ports on the back of it. I even made the bottom part of the mouse.
Also the ropes, the peeling wallpaper and the wrinkled carpet all were modeled to look like realistic physics. I did have to break realism somewhere though: as far as I know, this model of radio was never released in this colour scheme, but a black radio fits the game world better. Its dial also doesn't light up, but I made it that way so it looks more functional.
Now I’ll go back to Alan Wake II.
